How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?

Posted by on

Did you know that we spend as much as one-third of our lives asleep? Sleep is an important indicator of overall health and wellness. Feeling truly rested can make you healthier and more productive.

However, sleep is a complex issue. If you ask random adults how much sleep do they think they need, they would likely answer eight hours, but it’s not that simple.

A lot of adults are scared that they are not getting enough sleep, so they take sleeping pills, hoping to correct their habits. But this doesn’t really solve the problem.

Prolonged use of sleeping pills can lead to numerous problems. Stimulants like caffeine and energy drinks also contribute to messing up our sleeping patterns.

How Much Sleep Should You Be Getting?

There is no one correct answer. Factors such as age, lifestyle, and overall health have a huge impact on how much sleep you really need.

Some professional athletes are known to sleep as much as twelve hours a day, while there are people who can get by just fine with six.

It’s hard to pinpoint an exact number. The National Sleep Foundation released a study featuring the minimum and maximum amount of sleep required for each age group.

Here are some of their recommendations:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours a day
  • Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
  • Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
  • School-age children (6-13 years): 9-11 hours
  • Teenagers (14-17 years): 8-10 hours
  • Younger adults (18-25 years): 7-9 hours
  • Adults (26-64 years): 7-9 hours
  • Older adults (65+ years): 7-8 hours

It is also important to note how you feel depending on how much sleep you are getting. Do you feel tired after seven hours of sleep? Are you dependent on caffeine?

Do you feel sleepy when you are driving or even when you are in the middle of an important task? Pay attention to what your body needs.
